Letter from Dr. Jodi Swanson
It’s concert time again! Once again, it has been my pleasure this semester to teach and work with your children as part of our “Friday Afternoon Ensemble Choir” at DGM. Our Spring Concert is coming up next week, and I’d like to give you some information to be ready!
As I did last Fall semester, this Spring, I work with your young ones on Friday afternoons to foster their glowing love of music. We study rhythm distinctions, note patterns and pitch, listening to one another as part of an ensemble, and beginning skills in harmonies and different singing parts.
Our choir is gaining popularity: We’ve had two new members this semester! For their parents’ benefit, I’m repeating some Introduction information here. For those who have seen this before, please scan on ahead!
I’ve known some of you before, when our sons were students at DGM and when I coordinated the New Family Orientation Program. You may know that our family was struck by tragedy in early 2016 when my husband passed suddenly, and we were temporarily living in Florida closer to family support. We have moved back, and I was happy to fill this need for a choir teacher—it has been healing and uplifting to work with your children on Fridays. Then, as now, I am a member of the ASU faculty, teaching courses in child development, family dynamics, and parenting.
I have sung in amateur and professional-level choirs and musical theater productions and have played flute and piccolo for over 20 years. Currently, I am a first Soprano in the prestigious Phoenix Symphony Chorus—our 140-voice choir performs alongside the Phoenix Symphony at Symphony Hall and venues around the Valley. We just wrapped up a large concert of mixed pieces and will be performing the Brahms Requiem in May. In January, we did the second in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Let me know if you’re ever able to come to our shows or would like discounted tickets—I am permitted a limited number at discounts, and I’d love to see you and your children there!
You may have heard some of our fun songs (“Fried Zucchini”, “Aram Sam Sam”) at home, and you may have had glimpses of some of the ones we’ll perform at the Winter Concert. A primary purpose of this letter is to give you lots of details about the fast-approaching Spring Concert. Please make every effort to have your child attend—they have all worked very hard and we need each voice in our small ensemble!
DGM SPRING CONCERT: 6:00pm Thursday, April 26, 2018

- WHAT TO BRING: A happy smile!
IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT MUSIC (NO speaking parts this time!): Below the text of this letter, you will find the order of our performance music. For the songs, I have provided the order of the songs and links to YouTube videos with the music for practicing. Please have them practice the songs a couple of times this week and next week at home. Probably you have heard “Fifty Nifty United States” WAY TOO MANY times at home!
I am so excited the children and I get to share this music with you! Please feel free to e-mail me directly or call/text me with any questions. Looking forward to seeing you next week!
